Let’s be real – life can get super busy, and self-care can sometimes take a back seat. But when it comes to checking your boobs, it's one of those little things that can make a huge difference. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re here to remind you that regular breast self-checks are an essential part of staying on top of your health.
At Bodycare, we’re all about making things easier for you – and that includes your health routine. So, we’re proud to introduce the Boobycare campaign, helping you learn how to do a quick self-exam. Trust us, it’s way simpler than you think!
Why You Should Make Time for Boobycare
Breast cancer can affect women of all ages, and early detection is key. The good news? Doing a self-check is quick, easy, and can give you peace of mind. Plus, the more you do it, the more you'll get to know what’s normal for your body, making it easier to spot anything that feels off.
Here’s how to add Boobycare to your regular routine. We’re talking about taking just five minutes for yourself – in the mirror, in the shower, or even lying in bed.
Boobycare Self-Check: How to Do It
Here’s a no-fuss guide on how to give your boobs some love and make sure they’re healthy.
1. Start with a Look in the Mirror
Stand in front of a mirror, shoulders straight, and arms on your hips. Take a good look at your boobs. Here’s what you’re looking for:
- Any changes in size, shape, or symmetry.
- Swelling, dimpling, or skin that looks a bit off.
- Nipples that are turning inward or have changed position.
- Redness or soreness around your breasts or nipples.
2. Raise Those Arms
Now, raise both arms above your head and check again. Keep an eye out for any changes in the skin or how your breasts move when your arms are up. If something feels different, take note of it.
3. Feel Your Breasts While Standing (or Showering)
Time to get hands-on. You can do this standing up or while in the shower when your skin is slippery – whatever works for you. Here’s how:
- Use the pads of your three middle fingers and apply different levels of pressure.
- Move your fingers in small circles, starting from the outside of your breast and working your way towards the nipple.
- Make sure you cover the entire breast area, including under your armpits.
4. Lie Down and Check Again
When you’re lying down, your breast tissue spreads more evenly, making it easier to feel for any lumps or bumps.
- Lie on your back, put a pillow under one shoulder, and use your opposite hand to check each breast.
- Use the same circular motion and don’t forget to check under your arms, too.
5. Nipple Check
Finally, gently squeeze each nipple and look for any unusual discharge (like fluid or blood). If you notice anything different, it’s time to have a chat with your GP.
Tips for a Successful Self-Exam
- Know What’s Normal for You: Breasts can feel different depending on the time of your cycle, so get familiar with how yours usually look and feel.
- Be Gentle but Thorough: When you perform the self-exam, take your time and make sure to cover the entire breast and armpit area.
How Often Should You Check?
Once a month. That's it. Pop it in your calendar or set a reminder on your phone – just make sure you’re doing it regularly. The more you check, the more familiar you’ll get with how your breasts normally look and feel, making it easier to spot anything unusual.
What to Do If You Find Something
Found something that feels different? Try not to panic – most changes don’t turn out to be cancer. But it’s always better to be safe, so book an appointment with your GP to get it checked out. Early detection is a lifesaver, and getting into the habit of checking regularly can give you the confidence to stay in control of your health.
Make Boobycare a Part of Your Routine
Checking your boobs doesn’t have to be a chore. Think of it as a quick, easy self-care moment that’s all about looking after yourself.
