If you’ve ever worn a fitness tracker and noticed how many steps you take each day, you may appreciate how hard your feet work for you. They’re often way down the list of priorities though when it comes to our beauty regime given that they’re hidden beneath socks and shoes for much of the year.
If you’re preparing to bare your feet as we welcome the warm weather, here are six ways to show them some love.
The wear and tear on our feet can result in areas of hard skin around heels and toes. To soften any dead skin, soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes. Then using a pumice stone or a foot file like the Elegant Touch Pedicure Foot File, rub gently over problem areas with a circular motion, rinsing in the water as you go.
As well as keeping your tootsies looking tip-top, trimming your toenails correctly can help prevent in-grown toenails. Making sure that your feet and nails are dry first, use toenail clippers, like the Elegant Touch Toe Nail Clippers, to trim the nails straight across. Make sure you leave a little bit of nail growth above the toe tip as cutting them too short can make the skin tender. File away any sharp or jagged edges with the Elegant Touch Emery Boards.
Our feet spend most of their time cooped up in footwear and the warm, moist environment can create a breeding ground for fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Keep your feet hygienic and fresh with a daily antibacterial wash, using a soap like Simple Anti-Bac Soap Twin 125g, pat dry (especially between the toes) and then apply a good quality moisturising cream. We love O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet 60g for helping feet to stay soft and supple.
To avoid nails getting discoloured, begin by applying a base coat to your toenails. We like the Sally Hansen Base & Top Coat as it also helps to strengthen the nails. Then apply a wash of colour. Choose to embrace the summer season with the best-selling Technic Nail Varnish White to compliment tanned skin or opt for one of 2021’s hottest hues, a fresh lilac. We like Technic Nail Varnish Parma Violet. Otherwise go for a classic red like the Technic Nail Varnish Pillar Box.
If your feet tend to be on the sweaty side, don’t worry – our feet have more sweat glands per square inch than any other area of the body. Just like you’d apply a deodorant to your under-arms, you can also make a daily routine of using a foot deodorant. We like Escenti Deo Foot Spray as it is enriched with menthol and peppermint for a cooling effect.
Give your feet regular TLC by making a foot bath a regular fixture – they can be especially soothing after being on your feet all day. You can add-in a pre-bath step by applying a foot scrub, such as the Carnation Exfoliating Foot Scrub, to the soles of the feet and around the ankles, to avoid the build-up of hard skin.
